Our family is rallying around my baby sister, Amanda, a true force of nature. She’s always been full of energy, kindness, and sharp intelligence. She works very hard to care for herself and spent over 26 years as a loyal, valued member of her work family.
Recently, our world changed. Last year, Amanda was diagnosed with an extremely rare tumor that is affecting a kidney, part of her liver, and other nearby organs. A complete hysterectomy was expected to help but the tumor continues to grow. Despite this, Amanda had been managing the intense challenges of forced menopause and her highly stressful job, while facing the reality of an impending high‑risk surgery with a smile and her usual "can-do" attitude.
Sadly, Amanda was laid off in January and lost the health insurance she's had for 26 years. Her former employer’s new policy did not allow for any subsidy or assistance with insurance costs and she doesn't qualify for any government programs. She was able to get approval from one pharmaceutical company to generously cover several injections in hopes of shrinking the tumor enough for a safer surgery, but it only covers the medication, not the labs, scans, or other related costs. Even though COBRA costs less than the Marketplace plan options available, she must pay out of pocket to remain insured through COBRA.
This insurance is critical as we search for rare‑tumor specialists, clinical studies, and treatment options that could save her life, while keeping a close eye on her growing tumor.
We're reaching out to Amanda’s village—everyone who knows her, loves her, and has been touched by her kindness, diligence, or energy.
Any contribution, big or small, will help lift a huge burden during an already overwhelming time.
It truly takes a village, and Amanda has an incredible one. Thank you for helping us support her on this difficult journey.
