Support Amadu Barrie's Medical Elective in Kenya

Hello Friends,
I am helping raise funds to help send a promising young medical student from Sierra Leone (in West Africa) to undertake a month-long elective study rotation in Kenya (in East Africa), planned for September/October 2025. I have personally known Amadu Barrie since 2013-14, when I lived in Sierra Leone, and we have kept touch over the years as he has continued his studies. I have helped with some school expenses, but this opportunity to travel to Kenya requires some additional supporters to help make happen.

From my perspective, studying in Kenya will help give Amadu experience and exposure to a more complex medical system, raise his profile within the country, and help Amadu's career in the long term. Here is a recent article in NPR that gives a taste of the medical infrastructure in Sierra Leone.

Funds raised will go to cover rotation fees from the hospital in Kenya, flight costs, accommodation and food. He's got a passport and is in contact with the hospital; he just needs the funds to make it happen.

Enough from me; the rest of this message is directly from Amadu.

Thanks in advance for considering.
Josh

I am Amadu Barrie, a passionate and committed medical student in my fifth year of study at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences, University of Sierra Leone.

I am the first in my family to complete high school and gain admission to university, a significant milestone for us, as I come from a humble background where both of my parents, despite having no formal education, have always placed immense value on learning. Through their daily petty trading, they continue to work tirelessly to ensure that my siblings and I have access to education.

Pursuing a career in medicine has always been more than a personal ambition, I see it as a calling to serve my community with compassion, integrity, and professionalism. As a fifth year medical student, I am now at a stage where I need to undertake my clinical elective, a key component of my training that will allow me to gain exposure to different healthcare systems, broaden my clinical experience, and develop the skills necessary to be a well rounded physician.

Throughout my medical training, I have consistently shown a strong commitment to academic excellence and community service. I am deeply passionate about becoming a compassionate and resourceful physician capable of providing high-quality healthcare, particularly in under-resourced settings. My journey has been shaped by a strong sense of curiosity and the drive to learn from diverse healthcare systems.

The elective period represents a critical learning opportunity where I will engage in hands-on clinical practice, work under supervision in a new environment, and deepen my understanding of patient care across diverse medical conditions. It also allows me to observe different approaches to healthcare delivery, particularly in resource-limited settings or specialized institutions. However, while I am fully committed to making this elective a success, the financial demands involved (travel, accommodation, registration, and living expenses) pose a significant challenge. Coming from a modest background, these costs are difficult to meet without external support. Your support would not only ease this financial burden but would also allow me to focus entirely on learning and making a meaningful contribution during my placement.

Your support will be instrumental in helping me achieve this goal. It will not only support my immediate training needs but also invest in the future of a young doctor committed to service, leadership, and positive change in the health sector.

By supporting me, you are not only investing in my medical education, but also in the future of a young doctor who is committed to service, leadership, and improving healthcare in Sierra Leone. I view this elective not only as an opportunity for personal growth, but also as a chance to build professional connections and bring back valuable insights that can help strengthen healthcare delivery in my country.

Thank you for your consideration. I am determined to make the most of this opportunity and pay it forward through my future work as a medical professional.
