Aly is just 19, but life has already tested him in unimaginable ways. At a very young age, he lost his father. In December 2024, a tragic accident left him quadriplegic. Since then, he has endured extensive therapy and rehabilitation across Texas. On top of that, he lives with complex medical issues requiring daily specialized care. His mother, who also cares for another daughter with Down syndrome in Juárez, cannot be with him because her border permit has expired. His 13-year-old sister had to drop out of school to live with their mom while immigration papers are being fixed, leaving Aly completely alone in El Paso with no immediate family or friends nearby.

Aly is 100% dependent on assistance for his medical needs and all activities of daily living , including transfers and personal care. He is unable to push his wheelchair due to deficits in his hands and arms. Despite his efforts to fight for independence — selling chips at the park, even selling his only TV to pay utilities through Facebook market — Aly has faced many delays in accessing critical resources and support services, leaving him with limited nursing coverage and some days completely alone without the care he needs. His apartment is unsafe, often reaching 90 degrees inside — a dangerous environment for someone with his medical needs including Type 1 diabetes.
