I first met Civil Rights Activist Alvertis Simmons in 2003 at the corner of Colorado and Colfax. We were on opposite sides of an issue and were sign waving. Since that summer day, we have become friends, and I have watched him work his heart out helping the oppressed, the low-income, and those who have been discriminated against.
The verse "faith without works is dead" in James 2:26 is a call to believers to live out their faith through tangible actions. And for Alvertis Simmons, activism is his calling. He lives James 2:26 every day.
Alvertis founded and led the annual Life Skills and Basketball Camp, helped organize local men for the Million Man March, and has been an advocate for the families of police shooting victims, speaking out every time an unarmed black man is shot by police.
From giving away thousands of turkeys at Thanksgiving to raising money to buy back guns during Denver’s infamous “summer of violence,” Alvertis has a passion for looking out for his neighbors and creating connections.
He’s been on the front lines of justice, talking truth to power.
But like so many of those who tirelessly give to their communities, Alvertis doesn’t always take care of himself. 2025 has been rough on Alvertis -- from the passing of his daughter to being hospitalized with double pneumonia for 2 months, leaving him weakened.
He needs our help to get back on his feet doing the work in the community that sustains him.
