07/27/ 2024 (our mother’s birthday in memory is today)
UPDATE: My sister Alora has had a couple of really successful, but tough days. She has been working with the doctors on her Physical therapy. she worked 7 hours total both days dripping sweat and every and every muscle is sore. I am so proud of my sister Alora. She is working on healing and working to get her strength and mobility back to as much as she can. This all wears her out so much. The doctors still have the alarm on her bed when she is not working so no movement.
I will update more later.
Thank you all for your blessings and prayers.
Thank you!
Hi! First of all thank you for being here & for your support!
I am Mona , and Alora is my sister, my best friend. As I sit writing this, never thought in a million years i never thought we would be going through this. . .
On July 5, 2024 3:2: PM I received a call from Troy my sisters son he said “I am bringing mom to the hospital I think she is showing symptoms of having a stroke.” Alora did have a stroke and was admitted to Bartlett Regional Hospital. Alora could not talk or move her right side. They did a CT Scan and MRI and and EKG all confirming the stroke. We had a zoom with the doctor she was going to be admitted to the hospital here in Juneau Alaska. While in the CCU they monitored her, added medications for her high blood pressure and started her on medication for high cholesterol and a baby aspirin.
On July 9, 2024 Bartlett Regional Hospital discharged her and she came to my home. Doctors orders were to rest as much as you can to let your brain heal.
On July 11, 2024 at 11:30 PM Alora had another stroke. Again she could not speak and she could not move her right side. Her blood pressure was 298/198 she was left not able to speak or move her right side. They ran all the same tests i.e., CT Scan, MRI, ECG. This time after talking to other doctors via zoom and over the telephone they medivaced Alora and her son Troy to Virginia Mason In Seattle Washington. By the time she was medivaced she was able to speak a little bit, still the only movement on her right side was her right leg constantly twitching. They got her vitals and monitored Alora. Alora needed rest, her brain needed rest to heal. The doctors made a decision for Alora to do speech, physical and occupational therapy. (back tracking a little. When she was in Juneau the first thing they did in the Emergency room was to try and stand her up. In doing so she rolled her ankle. Our niece Christina Wigg Lee said “aunty her ankle is huge and black and blue and purple). so the Physical Therapy for her legs so she could walk again was very very painful for her.
On July 16, 2024 they transferred Alora to St Ann’s Hospital in Burien Washington for stroke care patients. There she was to get more stroke care i.e., speech, physical and occupational therapy.
Today July 24, 2024 they transferred Alora to CHI Franciscan Health another sister Hospital to Virginia Mason. Here she will be doing Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy.
We do not know how long she will be there. We are taking it day by day. the doctors say that a full recovery will be 18 months. That is when we will know approximately how much Alora will get back. The doctors said it is not something that happens overnight. It will take time for her brain to heal and to build her strength up again. She has made some great strides so far.
At Virginia Mason after Alora was able to sit up without falling to the left on her bed they had her work with a Sara Sturdy helping her stand up from a sitting position on her bed. her son Troy was a great support. He was on his way to go back to fishing when this happened.
Alora has made some good progress she can talk now and with a walker she can walk to the bathroom and the shower while a nurse stands by. She no longer Has to use a bed pan. She still cannot write or use her hands, fingers hardly at all. She can lift her right leg and her right arm now. If you know Alora , you know she is not one to give up and in turn her courage, her willpower and discipline are the fuel to keep her going.
she has been caught many, many times in the hospital(s) doing her Therapy’s on her own in bed. When she is allowed to sit up in bed she lifts her leg(s) and her physical therapy for her ankle. All of her progress you can see on her fb page as well. she has wanted to go home since day one. After such a life altering experience it has been nonstop researching, reading, asking, to get Alora the best treatment, therapies available out there. All of this comes at a great cost and expense that no one is truly prepared for. Her bills at home continue while in hospital. After juggling all by ourselves with support from some of our family members and friends, we’ve decided to reach out to our broader community for support. (while at virginia Mason Troy bought necessities with this help and the next day all the shampoo, conditioner, body wash, lotion all disappeared from the shower. The director of nursing thinks it was taken by a ptient who was discharged the next day).
It doesn’t come easy to Alora and I to share this publicly but no fight is won in isolation.
True moment of vulnerability.
The purpose of this page is to build a support fund to cover Aloras expenses at home, transportation and much more. All centered around helping her get through this while gods miracle is complete.
Any contributions will help alleviate some of the stress and burden on us, but especially Alora, who is just trying to fight this, win this with all she has but also live wholeheartedly.
It is with heartfelt gratitude that we say thank you for reading through and for any contributions made. One more thing we ask is for is to have her in your prayers, so all our voices are heard in the most highest.
Thank you, thank you, thank you, a thousand times over, thank you.
May god bless you and yours
With love and gratitude,
Mona
