Hi, my name is Alicia, and we were scammed out of an apartment. Me and my disabled daughter Kellie and my three cats lived in Pittsburgh, and I got a job transfer to New Jersey to be closer to family. I found a listing for an apartment on Craigslist. I signed a lease that I had a lawyer look at, and he said it looked legit. I had a welcome note from the property management welcoming us to our new apartment. I paid movers to pack up my current apartment, and today we drove to New Jersey. When we got to the apartment, I couldn’t get a hold of the property manager. I tried calling, and the phone number immediately hung up. I went to knock on the door of the apartment, and I could hear people inside. I went to a neighboring apartment and was told that there are definitely people living there. I went to the police station to file a report, which will be forwarded to a detective, and now me and my daughter and our three cats are in a hotel. I am paying a fortune for a hotel room and there is a $75 per pet fee. It is a Saturday, so I’m sure no apartments will be open tomorrow on Sunday as I now have to find an immediately available apartment. I have to contact our moving company to tell them to hold onto all of our belongings until I find a place for it to be delivered. I am now using the money that I was going to pay the movers upon the final drop-off of our furniture to pay for a hotel room. I was scammed out of $2600 for first month rent and security deposit, and I’m going to contact my bank since the transactions were done through wire transfers to see if I can be reimbursed. But now I don’t have any money to put down for a deposit on a new apartment, so I’m hoping someone will just work with me. I’ve had a lot of hard times lately, and this is just another blow. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
