My name is Marissa, and I’d like to share the story of someone who has shaped my life with extraordinary love, integrity, and quiet leadership, my uncle, Alfredo. I call him my Dad because that’s exactly who he’s been to me. Though I have a biological father, Alfredo has been the constant, the compass, and the caregiver in my life. And not just in mine, but in the lives of everyone around him.

When I was little, he used to make my ponytails before school. It’s a small thing, but to me, it says everything, that even when life was complicated, he showed up with gentle hands and a full heart and he’s been that way ever since.

Alfredo lives in Mexico and serves three generations of our family. He takes my grandmother and great-grandmother to their doctor appointments, makes sure their home is safe and repaired, shops for groceries, cooks meals, and still finds time to show up for friends and neighbors. He gives endlessly of himself and most of the times he ends up putting himself to the side.

He has dreams. He has vision. And it’s time for those to come to the forefront. Listening to his vision brought mine even more alive.

Alfredo is ready to step into a new chapter of his life. He’s willing to travel to attend Atlas, and he’s actively working on improving his English to participate fully and courageously. He wants to reconnect with who he is outside of obligation, to rediscover his “why,” his leadership voice, and what’s next for him beyond being the glue for others.
