For almost 32 years, my father-in-law, Fire Captain Al Hugo, has dedicated his life to protecting our community as a LA City (LAFD) Firefighter, saving thousands of homes and lives. Tragically, the Eaton Canyon Fire in Altadena, California, has turned the tables on this hero, destroying the home he and his wife, Carmen, lovingly built and cherished for 20 years.

Their home wasn’t just a house—it was a labor of love. My mother-in-law poured her heart and soul into creating a beautiful oasis of gardens that brought joy to their lives and to everyone who visited. She is also known for her generosity, always ready to give the shirt off her back to anyone in need and inviting friends and family over for a delicious meal.

Our family has a proud legacy of service, with a strong foundation in first responders. Al's twin brother serves as a firefighter for LA County Fire, and his youngest son is a firefighter for LA City Fire. This commitment to helping others runs deep in our family.

Now, my in-laws and their four beloved dogs—Jake, Lucy, Oso, and Marco—have lost everything. They are faced with the unimaginable challenge of starting over from scratch. After decades of helping others, it’s now our turn to help them.
