On Monday, October 7th, my baby sister Alex’s world came crashing down. This was the start of her birthday week, and she was gearing up for her daily bike ride to the park with her two Shih Tzu puppies, Ziggy and Bella, in the idyllic small town of Yellville, Arkansas. This simple weekly adventure would ultimately turn into a nightmare. She fell off her bike, causing it to land directly on her leg, shattering her femur.
Ultimately, this accident would prove to be God’s grace in disguise.
You see, my sister (and all of my siblings) suffer from debilitating anxiety when it comes to doctor's appointments or hospitals. This is because we had to watch our older brother Stephen go back and forth to the City of Hope for his leukemia treatment as a child. Our beloved brother Stephen ultimately lost his life to leukemia at 11 years old on Thanksgiving Day in 1968 at the City of Hope. So when I received the call about my baby sister Alex’s accident while in an ambulance on her way to the hospital, I knew it was severe. If there had been a way for her to have army crawled back to her house and taken a warm bath, she would have tried to fix her leg without any help from a doctor.
This accident is an example of God’s great love for us. In His mercy, He allowed Alex’s bike accident to happen to force her to go to a hospital because He needed to reveal something much more than just a broken femur.
Upon her arrival at the hospital, the doctor immediately requested further scans and testing, not liking the way her femur bone shattered. After several more, they were able to confirm that along with the bike landing on her leg, cancer played a vital role in her femur shattering. Further tests revealed that my sweet baby sister was diagnosed with stage four metastatic breast cancer days before her 54th birthday.
As we all know, there are a lot of unknowns for my baby sister Alex. We hope to get her into the City of Hope when her leg heals. It’s going to be a long journey of treatments and settling into this new normal.
We have had so many people reach out about supporting my sister during this time. As you can imagine, treatment and medical costs are incredibly expensive. To help ease the load for my sister, if you feel led, please donate to Alex’s journey with metastatic breast cancer. All donations will be paid toward Alex’s medical expenses. If you can not donate at this time then we kindly ask for you to pray for Alex.
We appreciate all of the prayer warriors out there who have steadfastly pleaded with God to flex His power like only He can and bring healing to my sister’s body. We recognize that everything we have is from God, and I know that my sister is safe in His hands and that only He has the power to restore my sister’s health. I trust and believe He can and will do so through the healthcare professionals providing care to my sister. If you or someone you know has been impacted by breast cancer we ask you to please share this page. Thank you for your prayers and support.
