Hi everyone! I am creating this fund for Alexis. Alexis has had type 1 diabetes since she was 10 years old.
In early 2024 we started the transplant process at Tampa General. A week after that appointment we were told they were no longer in network with her health insurance. At this time her nephrologist was concerned over her kidney functions and we were told dialysis was going to be needed soon but not just yet.
Fast forward to June 2024 it was time to start the transplant process at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville. After a weeks worth of testing and appointments Alexis’s nephrologist recommended she start dialysis ASAP. She could no longer wait. She was going to start at home dialysis however the surgery required for the catheter was not covered by insurance and her numbers were dropping so she went into the hospital to receive a chest catheter and start dialysis ASAP.
Right before Alexis’s 30th birthday her kidneys were failing, she was at end stage renal failure, was no longer working and starting dialysis.
The next year consisted of navigating this new challenge of dialysis and diabetes. Meanwhile through all of this we sold the home we were living in, had to throw away all of our belongings due to mold (another story for another time) and moved to Clermont.
In summer 2025 we started the process for Alexis to get listed at AdventHealth in Orlando. By the time Alexis was listed a week or so later we received ‘stand by’ calls which seemed promising but you just never know. At this time Alexis had to have her chest catheter replaced due to the first one failing. At this time we also realized a living donor was not going to be an option.
At the end of 2025 we started the process for UF (Shands) and again for Tampa General. Due to the upcoming holidays all appointments were on hold until the new year. We did decided to move back to Spring Hill to be closer to family for support during the transplant; whenever the call came.
In February 2026 we started going to appointments in Gainesville and by April Alexis was listed with Shands. She was on their list not even a week before we got the call for transplant.
We are super grateful for our experience with the transplant teams amongst all the hospitals. We are ETERNALLY grateful to the donors family for making the decision of donating their organs.
Now Alexis has a long road of recovery ahead which is why we are asking for donations to help for gas, doctor’s appointments co-pays, medications, food costs, etc.
Alexis hasn’t been working for 2 years and will not be able to resume work for at least 6-12 months. Plus she has to be extremely careful to not get sick. Her rejection medicine can run $400-$600 a month. Due to her immune system being high risk and compromised all food has to be prepared at home which does increase our grocery bills.
Any donation is appreciated! All the funds will go to Alexis & I’s expenses during this time.
Thank you to those who’ve reached out and have helped during this time already. Your support hasn’t gone unnoticed
