Aloha e ‘Ohana,
I have been chosen by my Kumu, Catherine Kau'ilaniokalaua'e Blankenship, from my Hālau, Nā Hula 'O Moku'āina Kūhai Hālau in San Ramon, California, to participate in an ‘Uniki Training Program. This honor reflects my years of dedication to hula and my commitment to supporting my hālau and our community.
The Kumu Hula training program is a deeply rooted cultural journey that prepares advanced hula practitioners to become teachers and cultural stewards. It goes far beyond learning choreography—students immerse themselves in Hawaiian history, language, protocol, and the responsibilities of leadership. Under the guidance of a master Kumu Hula Lehua Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett, we will study both ancient and modern hula, the meanings behind chants and songs, genealogy, cultural protocol, and the spiritual foundations of the dance. My years of training have included assisting my Kumu, learning traditional instruments, and helping to preserve our cultural practices. This journey will culminate in the sacred ʻŪniki Ceremony, where I will be entrusted with the kuleana (responsibility) to teach and perpetuate hula for future generations.
As part of this journey, I will travel to Hilo, Hawai'i five times each year for intensive week-long training sessions with other candidates. These gatherings are essential for learning directly from our Lehua Kawaikapuokalani and immersing ourselves in the traditions that guide hula. The costs (approximately $13,500/year) cover tuition, supplies, & implements, travel, lodging, transportation and meals.
Any amount you are able to contribute will be deeply appreciated. Your encouragement and support—whether through a donation, words of encouragement, prayers, or sharing this message—means so much to me. I am grateful for the opportunity to learn at this level and to carry forward the traditions passed down through my hālau, honoring my teachers, peers, and ʻohana. Your support helps me continue this meaningful journey and share these traditions on the mainland and beyond.
Me ke aloha nui,
Lexi "Sissy"
