Support Alexis’ Research in Austria!

I am incredibly excited to be a 2019-2020 scholarship winner to travel to Austria. I will be working jointly at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, as well as with the exil.arte Zentrum (The Exiled Artists Center), with Professor Gerold W. Gruber and Michael Haas, two foremost researchers in the field of exiled artists.
It has been a dream and aspiration of mine for many years to travel to the Austrian/German region for a longer period of time to undertake serious research and apply my performance skills to excavating the works of composers unfairly forgotten due to the Nazi’s fascist regime. In particular, I will focus on Egon Lustgarten, a scholar, composer, and professor forced to flee Vienna due to the rise of the Nazi regime.
As you may know, arts and education funds and scholarships have been severely cut in the past few years. While my grant offers a modest stipend on which to live and work, it is barely enough to cover living expenses for the year I will be abroad. I’m also restricted in taking on extra work due to my visa limitations.
Therefore, I am asking for the support of my friends, family, and colleagues to help defray living and travel costs for the year I am abroad. Those of you who know me well know this is not something I would ever ask lightly. I do not have the option of familial support and my husband is not able to financially support both of us, and will be making his own sacrifices to support me in this endeavor.
Though I am asking for personal funds, the ability to live (and survive!) in Vienna for the year means that I will have the ability to focus fully on my research, which I hope will be fruitful in the forms of papers, biographical writing about Egon Lustgarten, concerts, and lecture-recitals that will help to spread music and scholarly work of this unfairly forgotten composer.
Any amount, however small, will greatly help me to maximize my time in Vienna and help me to focus less on the stress of day-to-day financial survival and more on research and performance.
