My name is Alexia Austin and I am a third year medical student. I attended Virginia State University for my undergraduate degree and was a member of the Honors Program as a Provost Scholar. I was also inducted into the Beta Beta Beta Biological Honor Society my junior year. I graduated Cum Laude with a B.S. in Biology in 2019. I then completed my graduate degree at University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and graduated with a M.S. in Biological Sciences in 2020.
I’m finishing up my third year of medical school and preparing to take my medical licensing exam, Step 2. Asking for money is always a hard thing for me to do, but the financial burden is overwhelming at the moment. The journey to and through medical school is rough for everyone, but the added challenge of coming from a low socioeconomic background creates a uniquely difficult experience. The ridiculously high costs of everything from applying to med school, to board exams and exam prep, is more than enough to disqualify people who would be great doctors. It’s also enough to make you want to give up despite all the effort required to get into med school. But, medicine has been my goal since I was 3 years old and I have never wanted to be anything other than a doctor.
I reached out to my school for help, but there is no additional assistance available. Medical school education and training is full-time. I’m working in the hospital 10-12 hours a day, but medical students don’t get paid. I rely on student loans for all living expenses which barely covers all of my basic needs.
Whatever you can give is appreciated! Thank you so much!
