Hello!
My name is Alexa. I am currently a first-generation university student and am a semester and internship away from graduating. I am a child of immigrants who left their country to provide me and my siblings with better opportunities, especially a better education. All my life, I have hoped for the day I could honor this sacrifice by obtaining a college degree.
My family moved to the U.S. to live with my paternal grandma when I was three years old. My dad worked hard as a handyman to provide for us. Sadly, my mother passed away from cancer in 2005, leaving behind six kids, ranging from 1 to 10 years old. While this has been difficult for our family, my dad continued to be a pillar of strength and dedication. He continued to provide for us as best as he could. In 2017, he made the difficult choice to return to Mexico. He has been there since, unable to return to the United States.
I left to serve a church mission a few months after he left and returned in 2019. I then started school at the beginning of 2020. While difficult, I have learned how to balance working and studying to provide for myself and work towards a degree. There have been many highs and lows, but I have loved being able to further my knowledge and education. I am finally so close to receiving a Bachelor's degree!
This is where I would greatly appreciate some help. I am studying Recreation Management, and an internship is required for graduation. I am someone who loves live entertainment and was recently accepted to participate in the internship of my dreams! This internship will be in Los Angeles and will last just under three months this summer. While it is a paid internship, it is not nearly enough to cover living costs. Therefore, I am asking for help with funds to cover rent, as that is what will be most expensive for me. I am someone who has always tried to do things on my own, so starting this GoFundMe is new territory. However, this internship means a lot to me, and it is the last stretch for me to obtain my degree. It also opens doors to what I want to do most in the world! Any help would be greatly appreciated. Please help me honor my parents, gain a degree, and have a chance to participate in my dream internship!
