Talofa lava and Warm Greetings,
We’re reaching out on behalf of Alexander “Alex” Selefuti Pemasa, a beloved son, father, partner, brother and friend who is courageously battling end-stage heart failure. Alex’s only option for survival is a full heart transplant— a life-saving but incredibly expensive and complex procedure.
Alex is currently on IV medication and ECMO as he awaits a heart transplant match.
A comprehensive overview of the events that led up to his heart transplant:
Over a month ago, Alex was discharged from the hospital on IV milrinone to keep him stable while awaiting LVAD surgery.
For those who knew Alex, knew he was awaiting a date for his LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device). This is a step down from a complete heart transplant but also a life saving surgery.
After a month passed, his heart began to weaken and medication stopped working, making it hard for him to breathe. At a follow-up appointment, his condition was so severe, he was admitted immediately.
His heart continued to worsen, leading to emergency surgery to place an Impella device (a temporary heart pump). When that proved insufficient, doctors placed him on ECMO—a form of life support that takes over heart and lung function. Further evaluation revealed failure in both sides of his heart, making the LVAD no longer viable. A full heart transplant became the only path forward.
As the sole provider for his family, Alex is unable to work and won’t qualify for disability/assistance for another 6–12 months. This leaves his partner, Gabrielle, to carry the full financial weight while also caring for their four young children.
Anyone who knows Alex knows how selfless, kind, and dependable he is. He’s the first to show up when someone needs help—and now, it’s our turn to show up for him.
We are raising funds to help cover:
• Medical expenses not fully covered by insurance.
• Travel and treatment-related costs.
• Living expenses during this long road to recovery.
No donation is too small. Every dollar will go directly to helping Alex get the care he urgently needs and easing the stress on his family.
If you can, please donate and share this campaign with others. Whether through a gift, a prayer, or simply spreading the word, your support means everything.
On behalf of Alex, Gabrielle, and our entire family — fa’afetai tele lava (thank you very much) for your love and support during this time.
With deep gratitude,
Alex, Gabby & Kids
