Hello everyone. On August 10,2024 a young family’s lives were changed forever. It all started when Alex Morrissey, his fiancée Brittany Rivera, and their 2 ½ year old daughter Scarlet were driving home from their weekly supermarket visit. Out of nowhere, Alex had a seizure while at the wheel of his truck. When his body seized, his leg went straight onto the gas pedal. In an effort to protect them, Brittany grabbed the wheel and tried to reach the brake with her foot. Unfortunately, the truck crashed straight into a telephone pole and was totaled. Thankfully, all three of them were alive. Scarlet was left with minor abrasions from her car seat and Alex was left sore, bruised, and traumatized. Brittany, however, received the brunt of the injuries, with a broken pelvis, dislocated hip, a portion of her right hand degloved, along with a bruised face. She also had 2 surgeries (hip and hand), a lung blood clot, and a severe hand infection. After 3 months, she is still only able to put 50% pressure on her right foot (due to her hip injury). At the present time, Brittany is unable to drive, and it will be many months before she can return to work as a 3rd year apprentice with the Sheet Metal Workers local 19.
One month after the accident, while trying to find out why he had had a seizure, Alex had an MRI which showed that he had a brain tumor. This was immediately followed with brain surgery to remove the tumor. The pathology report following the surgery gave us the diagnosis of a severe form of brain cancer called Diffuse Hemispheric Glioma with the rare mutation H3K27M. This form of cancer is very rare, aggressive, and has no set course of treatment. Alex is currently in the middle of a 6-week course of radiation. He is considering participating in a phase 3 drug trial once the radiation is over. Alex’s cancer treatments are just beginning and will be going on for a long time to come.
As Alex’s mother and sister, we are asking for your support. Neither Alex nor Brittany will be able to work for the foreseeable future. Pending and future medical bills, living expenses, and raising a child is expensive. We would like to see these financial burdens lifted off Alex and Brittany, so they can concentrate on their physical and emotional wellbeing, and on raising their 2 ½ year old daughter.
Whatever you can give is beyond appreciated. Thank you for your time and prayers.
