Support Alethia's End of Life Journey
My little sister Alethia entered hospice in April 2021 because of terminal cancer. The tumor is in her brain stem and is slowly pressing against the spinal cord, which is causing loss of mobility and will eventually stop her organs from being able to communicate with her brain. She moved in with me, my partner Max, and my son Rojo (13) this spring, and we have been doing our very best to ensure that she is as comfortable as possible and is well cared for. She has two kiddos, Brandon (13) and Kaylee (11), who spent a wonderful summer with us and will continue to visit on school breaks.
We know Alethia is well-loved and there are so many of you who want to help. This fundraiser is a place for you to do that. Because of Alethia's significant delirium, she cannot be left alone for any amount of time and has to have eyes on her 24-7. She is on the state's waiting list for long-term care, which will help provide a caregiver, but in the meantime, our biggest need right now is a caregiver for a few hours a week. Any funds raised will be used to facilitate Alethia's care and basic needs, and to aid with travel for Brandon and Kaylee to visit their mom. If we raise more money than is needed, we are putting together a trust for Brandon and Kaylee, who will have a rough road ahead of them. We would like to build up some security for their future (a big thanks to my brothers Jeremy and Josiah, and sister-in-law Shula, who have been helping with all the complicated legal and financial issues we're navigating).
Thank you all so much for the love you have shown Alethia throughout the years and at this dark time. Her ability to interact online is inconsistent these days, but I will share any messages you post with her; getting virtual hugs always cheers her up.
Please be sure to follow our CaringBridge for updates as well.
In gratitude,
Seráh Blain, big sister to Alethia
