This is Aleiyah Ann Bonner, a 16 year old junior in High School. She’s a self proclaimed Anime nerd, music lover but SZA is her favorite, strong willed, and dreams to be famous.
September 3, 2024 our mother took her to an urgent care in Charlotte, Nc because Aleiyah was sick with symptoms that we did not understand ourselves. Aleiyah was nauseous, thirsty all the time despite drinking large amounts of water, excessive weight loss, discoloration in her fingernails, frequent urination, and trouble breathing. She was tested for multiple respiratory illnesses including Mono and Covid-19. These tests came back negative and without a clear diagnosis, they proceeded to send her home with the suggestion on hydration and rest.
The morning of September 4, 2024 our lives and hers were changed forever. That morning the family woke up to find Aleiyah in the tub with complaints of being hot but still responsive. We prepared ourselves to take her to the ER but before we could we went back to check on her to find her completely unresponsive. In a panic we called 911 for an ambulance to come after being rushed to the nearest hospital, Aleiyah unfortunately coded on arrival but thanks to the quick response of the paramedics, doctors, nurses, and also God she was resuscitated.
After being stabilized, we came to find out that she had Type 1 Diabetes which all the symptoms she was experiencing beforehand were all telltale signs of Diabetes and experienced loss of oxygen to the brain resulting in severe brain damage (TBI) which in result according to medical opinions means she will never be the same and will need 24/7 care for the rest of her life. While in the hospital there have been continuous complications and multiple surgeries to prepare her for her transition home. Although the odds are stacked against her we continue to have faith that she will beat these odds and will be a walking miracle someday.
Now our family asks for not only your help with donations to help pay for the things we’ll need to care for Aleiyah which includes a handicap van, in home nurses, and incoming medical bills not covered by insurance but also your awareness of Type 1 Diabetes and the result of it being ignored, misdiagnosed, and not common practice in the medical field to test for Diabetes despite family medical history. We also would like to shed light on the incompetence of Urgent Cares that fail to properly care for its patients and have not only failed this family but many more. Aleiyah’s life has been completely interrupted. Before this failure, she was a healthy teenager, with plans of take her driving test, starting her junior year of High School, and celebrating her Sweet 16th with her twin sister and now her whole life has been completely rerouted. This tragedy could happen to any family but unfortunately it happened to ours so we humbly ask that if you can’t donate, please share our story!
