My name is Alan, I'm 23 and I live with Marfan's Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects my connective tissue. Since I was three, I've had over nine surgeries done on my belly, groin, chest, and now eyes, but I’ve always refused to let Marfan's define me or limit my dreams.

Marfan's impacts my vision, making me prone to retina detachments and vision loss. Knowing this could happen to me, I’ve always been extra careful with my eyes.

On June 24th, 2024, while hiking in Pittsburgh, PA, I suddenly started losing vision in my left eye. It felt like a dark cloak covered it, with flashing lights and floaters. I panicked. I saw four different eye doctors the very next day on June 25th and had emergency surgery for a scleral buckle on June 26th to save my left eye. The surgery went well, and I returned home to Las Vegas a few days later to continue my recover with family and loved ones.

Just when I thought I was in the clear, a retina specialist in Las Vegas told me my right eye was also detaching. So, on July 8th, I had another emergency surgery to save my right eye, my surgeon did a scleral buckle for this surgery.

Then, on July 16th, I needed a third surgery because my left eye was still detaching and tearing despite the scleral buckle that was done on June 26th, so they went back into my left eye to perform a vitrectomy.

I’m no stranger to surgeries. The most difficult surgery I went through when I was 13 landed me in the hospital for half a month. The first few days, I couldn’t eat or drink anything, and I couldn’t even lift my hands. But I stayed strong. I slowly rehabilitated, getting myself to sit up, walk, and resume normal mobility through rehabilitation at the hospital and at home. I knew I was stronger for it, and I was able to recover in a few months from that surgery, which saved my life.

Recovering from almost going blind and these 3 eye surgeries won't be any different. I'm going to come out stronger than ever before. If I could go through my most challenging surgery at 13, I could overcome and heal from my retina detachments now at 23. I believe in myself and have so much faith in my heart.

My vision has changed drastically, and it's uncertain if it will get better or worse. I can’t work in person or on my laptop as I'm healing, so I don't have any income supporting me at this moment in time.

Your donations will help cover medical bills, business expenses (as I slowly get back into my business), and personal costs that will aid me after recovery, allowing me to focus on healing and getting back on my feet.

Your donations will aid me with:
  • New glasses and prescription
  • New contacts and prescription
  • Additional procedures I may (or may not) need for my eye (lasering, continuous check ups, and additional procedures if they're recommended by my surgeon)
  • Covering my monthly expenses such as phone bill and credit card bills until I'm back on my feet
  • Helping me cover my prescribed medications
  • And more... I will be sure to keep everyone updated on my progress.

Thank you so much for your support. I'll be sure to provide updates on my well-being as I continue to heal and progress :)

Much Love,
Alan
