Last Thursday, my younger sister Alaina was riding her electric scooter to our cousin’s apartment to spend time with our younger cousins who were visiting New York for the week. However, she never arrived.

A van struck Alaina, resulting in life-altering injuries… and now she has to endure the long road to recovery.

Alaina suffered multiple serious injuries from this accident. She broke her left femur in two places, sustained some skull fractures with bleeding, developed a small air pocket near her right lung, and suffered extensive road rashes and stitching on her face and torso.

EMTs rushed Alaina to the nearest hospital where she was treated swiftly, and then she underwent surgery the following morning. They had to place a rod along the length of her thigh to hold the bone steady, as well as install a plate above her knee to hold everything in place. They’ve also been monitoring her brain and lungs to ensure nothing more serious develops.

Thanks to the frequent visits of friends and family, Alaina has been able to keep her spirits up. However, her body will require months of intensive rehabilitation and medical care. The physical, emotional, and financial toll is going to be massive. The cost of ongoing treatments, therapies, and daily living expenses during this period is overwhelming.
