My wife, Aki, was suddenly hospitalized in April after developing jaundice and was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma or bile duct cancer, a rare (only eight thousand cases a year in the US) aggressive disease that usually has few symptoms before it is diagnosed. Curative options are limited to liver transplant or surgery with chemo and radiation afterwards.

Initially, we were told transplant would most likely be needed. However, once all tests were performed the surgeon said he was certain the cancer was small enough to be operative, as it had not spread outside the bile duct.

Aki had the surgery on May 28th, which was initially thought to be successful with clean margins. However, at the first meeting with the surgeon we received bad news, there was an area that was not completely resected. Also, there was involvement of 5 out of 11 lymph nodes, which changed the staging to Stage III; we were initially told it was Stage I.

Then next step is to start Chemotherapy and Radiation at the beginning of July
