Meet Aislinn Grace, a joyful, resilient 9-year-old who has faced extraordinary challenges due to a rare de novo mutation in her DNM1L gene. This ultra-rare genetic condition affects her mitochondria (the tiny powerhouses in her cells) leaving her body struggling to create the energy it needs to perform basic functions. This 'orphan' disease is degenerative, fatal and has no cure. Only a handful of cases exist worldwide, making her condition both isolating and especially difficult for her family to navigate.
September 2023, Aislinn Grace was suddenly admitted to PICU at SickKids with a life-threatening seizure condition (NORSE), spending months in critical care before doctors finally uncovered the genetic root of her struggles. Although she briefly returned home to a close-to-normal baseline, she endured another prolonged hospital stay in 2024 due to another episode of status epilepticus. Since then, her life has changed dramatically. She now faces constant, uncontrollable muscle jerking, and she is unable to walk, talk, or eat by mouth. Yet, through it all, Aislinn Grace remains a beacon of light, joy, and resilience, communicating her love and spirit in her own special way, through smiles and expressions that speak volumes.
Why We Need Your Help
This journey has placed incredible demands on her family, both emotionally and financially. Her father, laid off in December of 2023, has been unable to secure new work because of the full-time care she requires. Her mother is pursuing a degree to better provide for the family’s future, balancing school with part-time work, while her two older siblings do all they can to help. The family is now months behind on bills and at risk of losing their home. Their vehicles, essential for transporting Aislinn Grace to appointments, are also in desperate need of repair. In short, they are facing mounting financial hardship while trying to focus on giving Aislinn Grace the love, support, and stability she deserves.
