As many of you know, my mother—Aida del Valle—is an extraordinary person: creative, generous, and deeply community-minded. At 74 years old, she still enjoys her independence, but right now she also needs care and support from her loved ones and our extended network.

 

Over the past several years, Aida has been struggling with a rare chronic disease called bronchiectasis, which has exacerbated preexisting lung damage from a bad case of tuberculosis she contracted in her 20s. Treatment for this disease is time-consuming, and also involves additional daily burdens such as boiling her drinking water, keeping the house scrupulously clean, and investing in a special diet.

 

On top of these ongoing health challenges, Aida is facing a new shock to her system: on January 19, she suffered from an ischemic stroke. Initially she could not use her right arm and had trouble with speech. While she has responded well to medical intervention so far—she can speak and move her limbs as of today—I want her to be able to truly rest as she recovers. She shouldn’t have to worry about working right now.

 

Donations from this GoFundMe will allow her to take 2-3 months off from work and defray any medical costs not covered by insurance. She lives alone in California while I live mostly in New York, so we may also hire some part-time help around the house. There’s no one like Aida: please help me show her how much she is loved and valued!
