A dear, lifelong friend and loved one has ended up in a very difficult time. For those who understand the complexity and loss that comes with gender-based violence, it goes without saying that this is a time where incredible amounts of support are needed. This complexity is only furthered when intersections of Indigenous identity, queerness, disability are at play.
Escaping from violence is no easy task, and while I am grateful to be in a position where myself and friends can help out in the day-to-day aftermath of getting out from a high-risk situation, the true need is so much greater. A few weeks ago, my friend was able to flee one evening by actioning her safety plan with us. While she had the good fortune of getting to safety, she left with only the clothes she was wearing and her wallet.
Asking for help is the next task that doesn't come easily, but getting into housing is a big cost to come up with when someone has left with nothing and in the process compounded their traumatic stress. Gradually returning to the workforce and regularly accessing all the supports needed to heal after violence require a safe, stable, private space to grieve and regrow again.
We have a goal of $1500 to help with securing a rental!
This amount will help with both the deposit and first month of a rental!
Any further donations above $1500 will go directly to costs for clothing, food, household essentials and other immediate needs.
My friend is industrious, considerate, empathetic and always believing in the very best of others. I hope we can help her with getting into housing so that she can recover in peace and stability!
