Hello
I am starting this fundraiser for my wife, who has been on long-term sick leave for over a year due to Superior Mesenteric Artery (SMA) syndrome. Her illness has had a profound impact on her health, our daily life, and our family’s finances.
SMA syndrome is a rare and serious condition where the duodenum (part of the small intestine) becomes compressed between two major blood vessels, making it extremely difficult or impossible for food to pass normally. This can cause severe pain, nausea, vomiting, weight loss, and malnutrition.
My wife first sought medical care in October 2021 due to severe symptoms. Imaging studies were performed at that time, but her condition was unfortunately missed. In early 2025, doctors finally discovered that she had SMA syndrome all along, clearly visible on CT scans taken back in 2021.
Over the years, her symptoms worsened significantly. Today, she survives on a liquid diet only, such as nutritional drinks and soups. Over the past year, she has lost 16 kilograms (about 35 pounds).
In March, she underwent her first surgery. For the first time in a long while, she improved and was able to eat solid food again. We finally felt hope. Sadly, the improvement lasted only about three weeks before her symptoms returned. New imaging showed a narrowed passage in her intestines.
In September, she underwent a second surgery. During this operation, doctors found that her intestine had twisted half a turn. It could not be fully corrected, but the surgeon believed it might still provide relief. Unfortunately, her condition has not improved as hoped.
She is currently unable to eat solid food at all. Recent examinations show that her stomach does not empty properly, and further investigations are ongoing.
Alongside the medical challenges, she has been on sick leave for more than a year. Under Swedish regulations, sickness benefits are reduced after long-term illness, even when the person is still severely unwell and undergoing active medical evaluation. This has resulted in a significant loss of income, while expenses related to healthcare, travel, and daily living continue.
This fundraiser is intended to help cover
• lost income due to reduced sickness benefits
• ongoing expenses related to long-term illness
• financial stability while medical investigations and treatment continue
Any contribution, no matter the size, means more to us than words can express. If you are unable to donate, sharing this fundraiser is also a huge form of support.
Thank you for taking the time to read our story and for any support you can give.
