With the sudden collapse of the Afghan government, my parents and siblings with their small children were fortunate to be evacuated from Kabul amidst the traumatic chaos and shock. My family and I are forever grateful to everyone who helped with the evacuation effort.
My family members had to leave their entire lives behind for the second time. They had been refugees in the late 1990s, returning home in 2001 after the Taliban defeat. They rebuilt their lives from scratch with renewed hope for a democratic Afghanistan, where women’s education and minority rights would be protected. By mid-August of this year, all that vanished into thin air.
Their status as members of the Hazara minority put them in imminent danger of persecution in a Pashtun-dominant country where Hazara people have been oppressed and persecuted for over a century. Hazara communities across Afghanistan, witnessed numerous targeted killings of their youth and their educational centers in recent years.
My family members are currently in a third country, completing their immigration paperwork to come to the United States. They fled only with their travel documents, once again starting their lives from scratch as refugees.
As they complete the immigration process, my friends and I are seeking to raise funds to help my family’s resettlement in America. It is going to be a long and bumpy road, but they are resilient and they know they have many great friends in America who will welcome them to their new home.
Note: For the sake of my family's safety, family members names, locations, and photos cannot be disclosed at this time.
