Support Afghan Allies in Their Time of Need

Many of you know that I worked on elections in Afghanistan. One of the first ones I did was in 2005. I had a great Afghan team, some of the best people I ever worked with. The photo is of me in 2005 with my Afghan fixer, Murad, who is now in danger along with other members of my team. Over the years, all them put in years of dedicated work with the US government. The abrupt Taliban takeover of Afghanistan in 2021 put several key members of my old team in danger, precisely because of their loyalty to our country. We managed to get one out to Columbus, where he works hard, has become a member of the community and has his kids (importantly his girls) thriving in school. We also worked tirelessly over the years to finalize the visa cases of two more, which were recently approved. We had just made the plan to get one of them to the US. But all the promises made to my team and to other Afghans who believed in our country have been broken. My guy in Columbus had everything he needed to be in the country legally, including a work permit. But despite applying early for the renewal of his work permit, the government simply ignores his application. With his existing permit expiring, he cannot work. If he cannot work, he cannot feed his family. He is still legally entitled to stay in the country, but how can he exist with no money? And for my guys who were hoping to soon come to the US, the situation is worse. Despite having everything approved and in order for the final big step, the government simply cancelled its promise to them. Years of hope and effort are now up in the air as another tough Afghan winter approaches. Instead of these members of my team becoming hardworking members of our society, they are stuck for the moment. They can't work. The ones in Afghanistan remain in immediate danger, while the one in Columbus risks being sent back to that danger. The situation for the children is terrible too, particularly for the girls. In Afghanistan, they have no prospects at all. So, unfortunately, the focus of my Go Fund Me campaign has shifted to survival. Can you help me keep these guys going while we wait for a better day? Thanks.
