Hi! We are Anya, Ezra, Hannah, Kai, Koji, Max, and Sami, AFE's 2025 ROV team. We're raising funds to support our team's participation in our local ROV competition which is happening on April 26. We would love your help!

What's an ROV, you ask?

Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are underwater robots that enable researchers and industry professionals to visually assess underwater areas that were once unreachable or too dangerous for human access.

This year our team is building an ROV along with a variety of profiling floats with chemical and biological sensors to monitor circulation, chemistry, biology, and overall ocean health. Our team acts as a company with each participant fulfilling specific roles from CEO, to CFO, Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and Marketing Leads. This is AFE's 7th year participating in this program. Each year, teams learn from, incorporate and build on the previous year's designs and efforts.

AFE’s ROV program has helped kids find their way into the field of technology, an opportunity they may not have had otherwise. The ROV program provides an alternative to the traditional classroom setting, allowing kids to engage in hands-on, real-world problem-solving. This program helps many kids find their passion, develop new skills and build confidence.

Our success stories speak for themselves. Stephanie, a previous participant, went on to college and is now attending an engineering school on the East Coast. Isaac, another former student, is now a mentor and advisor for our program while also attending Cabrillo and participating in their ROV program. His team even won the International Championship in the Pioneer class (college-level ROV) in 2022, and again in 2023, beating out numerous other colleges from around the world. Even students who didn't pursue a career in technology still benefited from the program's focus on marketing, public speaking, and running a small business.
