I wanted to introduce myself. I'm Adrian Parkinson, or “Parky” as people call me. I grew up in California, where I discovered the love of surfing and anything else to do with water. I later moved to Utah to be closer to my family. About 4 years ago, I married the love of my life, and we have 3 beautiful daughters and 2 amazing grandchildren.
About 5 years ago, my life took an unexpected change. I was not feeling great; however, I kept working and providing a living. Finally, I took notice of my body and went in to see why I was not feeling well. After several tests and a biopsy, I was diagnosed with stage 4 Adenocarcinoma of the Lung with EML4-ALK fusion, which in layman's terms means I have Lung Cancer with a special mutation because I never smoked. Only 5% of cancer patients in the world have this rare mutation. I was placed on a relatively new targeted drug, Alecensa. This medication is quite expensive; however, I have been blessed to be on it. Currently, with it working, there is no need for Radiation, Chemotherapy, or Immunotherapy drugs. I do have multiple scans and tests throughout the year, which does cost quite a bit. I do have to be careful around others, as my immune system is compromised, and something as simple as a cold could cause a hospital stay. I plan to use funds to help pay for medical expenses ( co-pays, tests, hospital stays, etc)
I have been unable to find a full-time job to help provide for my family but also to help pay for medical costs. Hearing the word “cancer” can cause fear for some, but my employer took a chance hiring me, and I am blessed to have a part-time job as a Crosswalk Guard.
With this diagnosis, I have gained new insight on life and what’s important! I savor my life and am ready to bring the fight to cancer. Please join me in my fight with “cancer”!
