Support Adam Brizendine's Road to Recovery

Donation protected
Hello I'm Samira I am setting this up on behalf of one of my dear friends, Adam Brizendine. We are trying to raise money for our friend who needs major surgery and has been out of work due to his injury and disease, and is in danger of being evicted. We are raising to help with his rent and medical expenses post surgery. Trying to keep him a float until he is literally back on his feet.

Any amount helps!

Please read his story below:

The last two years have been extremely taxing on me. I have gone through several mental and physical traumas that left me unable to work for months at a time and caused financial hardships (credit card debt, paying rent, and medical bills just to name a few.) I try to stay as optimistic as I can throughout but sometimes life just likes kicking you when you're down.

Starting in November 2022, I had a 14 hour surgery to have my entire pancreas and gallbladder removed (also had a lung collapse during surgery). This made me type one diabetic overnight. For those that don’t know it can be a very difficult disease to navigate and manage. It is an everyday battle that I continue to fight.

In January 2023, my Dad (who was also my best friend) died suddenly of a massive heart attack and was devastating for my family and I.

In the three months following that I had 3 of my closest friends die from (diabetes complications, suicide, and one killed by a drunk driver). All of which still weighs heavily on my heart. I am getting professional help for it but grief is just one of those things that likes to hang around and pop up on me when I least expect it.

In March of 2024, I was in New Orleans for a wedding (that I missed because my blood sugar got dangerously low right before the wedding and I had to go back to my hotel and rest). I ended up being robbed at gunpoint a night later just blocks away from my hotel. They stole my phone, wallet and diabetes kit that I carry with me. They used my face to unlock my phone before running off. They were able to access all of my online banking because I had automatic login. They were able to take every penny I had in my checking accounts and spent over $10K on my credit cards before I could get to my banks. I spent months battling them over the fraud. For anyone that has had to go through that knows how difficult it can be especially when you don't have a phone to call them and have to go to the physical bank every time.

Just a few short months after that I woke up from a nap to a weird tingling sensation in my feet that quickly started running up my body. It soon got to my head and I quickly realized I was having a seizure. I was eventually able to call an ambulance once it settled down and once in the hospital they told me I had a diabetic seizure. My neurologist in the hospital said it wouldn't be safe for me to work for a few months because looking at screens would irritate my brain and take longer for my brain to repair.

In December of 2024, I was sound asleep when my phone started going nuts. It was an alarm from the Constant Glucose monitor that I wear on my stomach. My glucose was extremely low. I got up to use the bathroom and get some juice and when I did, I got extremely lightheaded and fell awkwardly. I ended up going to the emergency room because my back was in extreme pain and after a CT scan, MRI, and X-ray it was determined that I had a compression fracture in my L1 and L2 vertebrae. I am still wearing a back brace to this day and in constant pain. I have had physical therapy, have a surgery scheduled for February 27th, 2025 and have physical therapy again after. I am still unable to sit up, stand, or walk for more than a couple minutes at a time. This again has made it near impossible for me to work for the last couple months.

Unfortunately my family is unable to support me at this time, and while I am not one to ask for help as I like to be the one helping others. I am close to being evicted at the end of February and need to stay in my apartment in DC so I can stay close to the litany of doctors I have and get the physical and mental care that I need to get better.
