San Diego County is using an experimental water test in Coronado and the results are unnecessarily closing down beaches. New evidence is available in the form of a scientific study that concluded the water test being used to evaluate Coronado’s beaches is wrong 56% of the time. This flawed test is then being used to unnecessarily close our beaches to water contact. We need to get the word out and pressure San Diego County to stop using their experimental ddPCR test in Coronado. It’s been a four year experiment and Coronado needs a break.
The trans boundary sewage problem from Mexico is an urgent problem and fixing it is the ultimate long term solution. Thank you and respect to everyone who’s been in this fight, especially Coronado’s City Council. Until the ultimate solution is executed, we need to solve a major problem affecting our local beaches, communities and tourism…false positive water tests that unnecessarily close beaches and damage tourism in Coronado. A false positive occurs when a test says “yes, there’s a problem” when in reality there is no problem. A recently published scientific study looking at Coronado’s beaches concluded: when the traditional Enterolert method said the water was safe, the ddPCR method still flagged it as unsafe 56.3 % of the time. As a result, the beaches face unnecessary closures, impacting residents, visitors, and local businesses.
The NadoH2O group is advocating the County of San Diego prioritize the Gold Standard Enterolert method for water testing in Coronado and stop their experiment with the new ddPCR test. It’s not accurate in Coronado. Based on this new study, Coronado doesn’t have a water problem, we have a broken test problem.
Coronado’s reputation as a world-class vacation destination is strong but needs protecting.
Funds raised will go directly toward water sampling lab costs, and grassroots activities to share data results and advocate for better beach management in Coronado. Please support this important effort to keep our beaches open and safe by contributing to this fundraiser. Every donation helps bring us closer to a solution that benefits the entire community.
