Support Abed's Family Journey to Safety

Dear Friends and Community,

My name is Mohammed, a 31-year-old IT advisor from Gaza, reaching out with a heavy heart. My life, along with that of my wife Rasha, our daughters, and our extended family, has been irrevocably altered by the devastating war that erupted in October 2023. Today, I humbly ask for your support to help us find safety, re-treat and start anew.

Our Life Before the War

Before the war, our lives were brimming with dreams and dedication. Rasha, 30, an unwavering humanitarian worker, and I have devoted the last seven years to enhancing our community in Gaza. Together, we created a home—a haven of love and aspirations for our daughters, Joly, 4, and Kinda, 11 months. Our family has always stood on a solid foundation: my father, Dr. Noman, a respected retired physician who has significantly contributed to Gaza's healthcare scene, and my beloved mother, whose nurturing spirit and sage advice have always led us. My brother Abdelazeez, 30, who works in media, his wife Saba, a gifted software engineer, and their baby Noman, 7 months, are integral to our tight-knit family, enriching our lives with their presence.

In Gaza, we've weathered storms before, facing challenges yet always finding a way to remain in our homes. However, this ordeal stands apart. Within a mere five days of the conflict erupting, we were compelled to leave our home behind, seeking refuge with hosting family in the southern reaches of Wadi Gaza.

“To say we are struggling is an understatement. It's clear that the aspirations we held for our family have been irrevocably altered from just one day before the conflict to the next. Now, our singular wish is for peace. We yearn for a sanctuary—a place safe from the shadows of violence, free from conflict, where we can earn our living and where our children can grow surrounded by peace. This hope for a tranquil existence is the only dream we dare to hold onto now.”

The Devastation of War

Since October 13th, we've found refuge in a single room with a hosting family in southern Gaza, and with each passing day, the struggle intensifies. The shadow of concern over our safety and the essentials—food, water, electricity—never fades. The absence of fruits and meat has become our norm for months, raising fears of malnutrition. Our daughters frequently fall ill due to contaminated water. Safety seems like a distant dream in Gaza, even in its southern reaches.

In February 29, UNICEF highlighted the grim reality: children in Gaza are facing acute malnutrition, with the availability of safe water less than 1 liter per person.

On the 140th day of war, a significant moment marked a turning point for me. My daughter, Joly, was jolted awake in the dead of night, engulfed by fear, crying out, "Send me back to our house, I want to go back to my playroom." It was this heart-wrenching plea that crystallized my resolve to initiate this campaign.

The health of my parents who battling serious health issues, hangs by a thread amidst the scarcity of medical supplies and care in the area's few operational hospitals.

The air strikes have taken friends and family from us, and the constant bombings remind us of our vulnerability. Brief cessations in hostilities reveal a landscape of ruin, resembling scenes from a dystopian film. Amidst this destruction, the injustice of our daughters' reality weighs heavily on us. Kinda, not yet a year old, has experienced most of her life in the turmoil of displacement. Essential needs like milk, diapers, medication, and vaccinations are beyond our reach. Joly, who eagerly enroll in KG2 class last September, has seen her education and the joy of new friendships halted, now only memories she clings to.

“Our hearts ache for our children, who deserve a haven—a place where safety, health, and education are not just dreams but realities.”

The Urgency to Evacuate

Our most pressing goal is to evacuate to Egypt, a journey fraught with financial and logistical obstacles. The cost of crossing through Rafah (no other options), $5,500 per person, is a significant barrier, not to mention the subsequent expenses for resettlement. Our family's safety and the chance to rebuild our lives hang in the balance.

How Your Support Can Help

Immediate Needs: Our intention is to evacuate to Egypt. Departing from Gaza involves significant financial outlay, encompassing crossing fees to Egypt ($5,500 per individual, subject to fluctuation), as well as expenses for paperwork, passports renewal, lodging, and travel. Upon arrival in Egypt, we must cover basic costs including housing rental, apparel, infant necessities like milk and diapers, vaccinations, and food supplies. The support sought is specifically for covering the cost of the crossing fees to leave Gaza, without any other costs which being flexible, allowing us to adjust them to the minimum required based on our needs.

If Evacuation Fails: At the same time, we're fully aware of the unpredictable nature of life in Gaza. If, for any reason—be it financial limitations, the peril of travel, or changes in accessibility—we find ourselves unable to leave, rest assured that the funds gathered will be devoted to fulfilling our immediate needs right here in Gaza. Under such circumstances, we'll do everything within our power to pick up the pieces and build a meaningful life for our family, despite the hardships we face.
