Support Abdias Hernandez's Engineering Dream

Donation protected
Hi, my name is Abdias Benjamin Hernandez. I’m a first-generation high school and college graduate, and I’m asking for your support to help me pursue my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.
A Journey from Struggle to Hope
I moved to Houston when I was 15 and had the privilege of continuing my education in the United States. My parents didn’t speak Spanish or English; therefore, they didn’t help with my studies since elementary—our family spoke a native Mayan dialect. We came from poverty in a third-world country, and living in a one-bedroom house with five siblings was like heaven compared to where we lived.
When I went to high school, I had one rule: stay out of trouble. If I did, I could stay in school. But if I messed up, I’d be banned from school by my siblings and forced to start working. I didn’t have financial support from my parents, and I walked all four years to school, wearing the same two pairs of jeans.
Early Work Experiences
I started working at 16 here in Houston, washing sheets and towels at a hotel during my high school sophomore year. It was difficult, and at times, humiliating. I still remember the shame of it. But I kept pushing because I knew that this was the only way I could survive and continue my education.
Pursuing Higher Education
Despite these challenges, I managed to finish high school. Afterward, I worked at a bike shop with flexible hours, which allowed me to continue my studies. In 2014, I earned my associate degree in Mechanical Drafting and Design from Houston Community College. I completed my education without owing a single dime, working hard and living far below my means and sacrificing fun.
Struggles & Setbacks
Finding a job in my field as a mechanical designer has been a challenge, especially due to my immigration status. Even after DACA was granted in 2012, I continued facing roadblocks. Companies didn’t consider my resume, and I didn’t have connections in the industry. It’s been a long, difficult journey, but I’ve never given up. Never give up!!
Family & Personal Life
My father, who struggled with mental illness, passed away in 2020. My mother is now over 80 years old, and my siblings and I care for her. I’ve been working since I was 8 years young, and much of the money I earned went/going to supporting my family and myself. I am emotionally drained and physically exhausted, but I keep pushing forward. At 36 years old my total asset is less than $80k.
Dreams and Sacrifices
Throughout my life, I’ve sacrificed so much. I didn’t date or hang out with friends. I couldn’t afford to play sports in high school, specifically soccer, because I didn’t have the money for a physical exam and the time to play. Though I was talented at cycling, I had to give it up to focus on finishing college. I was never able to pursue my dreams. Another dream that just got crushed is starting a business; due to a lack of resources and knowledge.
Why I’m Asking for Your Help
Now, I am asking for your help to take the next step in my journey. I want to pursue my bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering to build a better future for myself and my family. I’ve come this far, but I can’t do it alone anymore. If there are any funds remaining, they will go toward helping me buy a house to live in and continue my studies.
I know the road ahead is long, but I’ve endured so much already. I’m ready to take the next step, and with your support, I know I can achieve one of my dreams.
Thank you for your time, generosity, and support.
Sincerely,
Abdias Benjamin Hernandez
