My name is Wes, and that is my beautiful daughter Abby. She was recently diagnosed with severe scoliosis. It has been developing her whole life, but wasn’t found and diagnosed officially until 2 weeks ago. She hit a growth spurt and her body didn’t accelerate at the pace that her spine did. Included are pictures of her spine and the detailed analysis given to us by her orthopedic surgeon.
Because it was caught so late and being that the damage is so severe, we’re past the point of being able to repair it naturally with braces and time. It’s not only curved left and right, it’s also starting to twist which causes concern for her spinal cord and mobility in the future. The option on the table is a full spinal fusion. This will take place in Dallas at the children’s spinal hospital. They’re the closest ones with expertise in a case like this.
To say we were blindsided is an understatement. We were fully expecting a less invasive option, as any parent would. Due to this, we were not prepared financially and to meet the timeframe we have, we need some help. They’re pushing us through to get appointments before the end of August. We have no idea how long it will take, how long we’ll be there, or what the process involves entirely. It will be my wife and I traveling with her for however long it takes to see this through to the end.
Financially, this would be impossible without some support. I have no PTO leave left, and am the only income for our household. We realize everyone is struggling in this awful economy, but if you feel compelled to help and are able to, we would be forever grateful.
