Abbi Monaghan is a 14 year old that is living her best life despite significant challenges.
At 18 months old Abbi was diagnosed with Cystinosis.
Cystinosis is a rare, incurable metabolic disease in which the amino acid cystine gets into the cells, but has no transport or out. Because of this defect in transportation the cell crystalizes causing early cell death.
Cystinosis slowly destroys the organs in the body including the kidneys, liver, eyes, muscles and the brain.
Abbi has some photo sensitivity because of the crystals that have built up in her eyes. she wears sunglasses when she is outside and sometimes inside with fluorescent lights.
Abbi is on a strict medication routine, every six hours around the clock. 45 doses daily of pills, capsules and liquids.
This brings us to today.
Right now Abbi and the family and busy planning and preparing for her kidney transplant.
Abbi has 13% function left, so this is happening quickly.
The transplant is being done at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital. This means that Abbi and Katie need to live in Toronto for as few as 3 months (but with rare diseases it's never exactly known) but likely up to 6 months. Fingers crossed for 3.
She will require daily hospital check ins, medications, infusions and testing.
We (as a team) are here now asking for help to support this amazing family through this extraordinary time.
We are looking to help by offsetting some of the costs.
Here are the projected costs:
Daily parking at Sick Kids - $1200
Condo rental near Sick Kids - $10,000
Special diet/supplements/food in hospital - $2500
Gas cards so that dad and brother can visit - $2000
