Hello everyone! For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Abbey, and I am currently a freshman at NIU studying nursing! Though I have not started my nursing school yet because I am getting all my gen eds out of the way, I am still enjoying college life so far! Some of you may know that I LOVE to travel, which is exactly why I have created this GoFundMe!

I was recently informed about an organization called MEDLIFE. MEDLIFE is a non-profit organization that collaborates with low-income communities to improve access to medicine, education, and even community development projects. Their mission is to build a worldwide movement to empower low-income individuals in their fight for equal access to healthcare, education, and a safe home. Their vision is to have a world free from the constraints of poverty achieved through sustainable development. The organization is mainly based in South America and Africa. However, there are many Chapters around the globe, commonly found on college campuses. This year NIU has established a chapter and is looking to go on a service trip to Lima, Peru next spring.

After hearing about this organization, I thought it would only be fitting to join, considering it is right up my alley, and considering the healthcare aspect.

After deciding that I wanted to join, I had a meeting with a member of the expansion team for MEDLIFE. He oversees conducting interviews to find candidates to establish the executive board of chapters. After having the meeting, I was awarded Director of SLT and Travel! Essentially, this position entails getting the community involved and helping to plan travel to local communities.

As a member of the executive board, I plan to travel to Lima and be able to participate in the Service Learning Trip. However, the cost is something I am looking to help get covered. The cost of the trip is roughly $1,700 not including airfare. I was able to receive a scholarship because this is NIU’s first year and that lowered my cost to roughly $600 not including airfare. I am looking for your help to reach my goal of $2,000 to help cover the remaining expense of the trip, my airfare, cost for food, and being able to explore the community and afford any excursions that are offered for extra learning on the trip!
