My colleague Aaisha has been a devoted special education paraprofessional in my Autism classroom in Dearborn Public Schools for the last two years. She exudes compassion and love, both in the classroom and within her community, and she always puts the needs of others before her own. She is a loving wife and mother to three children and is currently enrolled in college courses, working toward her dream of becoming a special education teacher. Last year, Aaisha unfortunately lost both of her parents within a few months of one another, and recently has been looking forward to renovating and moving into her newly purchased home, hoping for a fresh start to continue her healing, as well as create a safe and loving space for her children.

Over the weekend, Aaisha was traveling in Detroit with her teenage daughter, her 10 year old cousin, and her adult cousin (the young child’s mother). Tragically, their vehicle was struck and they were involved in a devastating accident where her 10 year old cousin lost her life. Aaisha gratefully did not sustain any serious physical injuries, however her daughter and her adult cousin remain in the ICU, continuing to work towards recovery. Her family does not have any health insurance at this time. The emotional and financial toll on both families is overwhelming, as they face mounting medical bills and the unimaginable loss of a beloved child.
