Hi everyone.

My name is Angelo, and I’m a professor of mathematics and a human rights activist in Ottawa, Canada. I am reaching out to you during a time of immense need for a remarkable couple that I know personally whose lives have been turned upside down by the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Ilya, a dedicated professor of Sociology at a former Ukrainian university in Bakhmut (in Luhansk) and his wife, Natasha, a passionate journalist and artist, are facing an uncertain future as they must prepare to return to their beloved homeland in a few months. Ilya has authored over 230 works, including publications, interviews, and media features, focusing on social studies and sociological theory and methodology, conflict and war in Ukraine, ethnic relations, and cultural sociology.

They have built a life centered around education, research, and community engagement. As their stay at a North American university can no longer be extended past September 17, he will be out of a salary so they must leave for their homeland prior to Dec 31, 2025. His condition is complicated by a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma in February of this year. On May 15, he had an operation to remove his prostate. Unfortunately, the cancer has spread, so further treatment with hormonal therapy and radiological methods is necessary. The program of such treatment is calculated until the end of December. I can personally vouch for him.

As you know, the war in Ukraine has devastated countless lives, and unfortunately, Ilya’s and Natasha’s are among those impacted. As the situation continues to deteriorate, Ilya has been informed that his position in the Ukraine is no longer available due to the university's closure and the dire circumstances surrounding the conflict, their home and books have all been destroyed. With heavy hearts, they are forced to confront the reality of unemployment, a harsh and life-threatening climate, and the challenges that come with it.

This campaign aims to raise $10,000 to help support both Ilya and Natasha as they navigate this difficult transition. The funds will be used to cover essential living expenses for now, provide for their basic needs, and assist them in seeking new opportunities in a devastating environment, without a home or job.

Ilya has dedicated his life to understanding social structures and advocating for justice. His research has enriched the academic community and inspired countless students. Natasha has also made significant contributions as a journalist and reporter, focusing on East -West relations.
