Supporting Art That Connects Us All

For over 30 years, I’ve had the privilege of painting the landscapes and architecture of our beautiful area, most of that time in the Rivertowns community I love. After training at the Art Institute of Boston, the International Center of Photography, and the Art Students League, I found my calling: capturing the beauty of our shared surroundings and making it come alive through oil painting.

You may have seen me working outdoors, first at the South Street Seaport, in Central Park, then along the Hudson River from Wave Hill to the Rivertowns. I paint in public because I believe art should be accessible, visible, and part of everyday life. The moments when strangers stop to watch--people of all ages, some who’ve lived all their lives in the area, some who’ve discovered it in recent years, others visiting from the other side of Westchester or the other side of the world; the moments when a child points excitedly at the color--these tell me this work matters.

I paint in the tradition of artists like Hopper, Vermeer, and the French Impressionists--not trying to be trendy, but rather because I believe in art that celebrates beauty and touches something fundamental in us. Every brushstroke is deliberate, informed by decades of study and practice. While wonderful photographs of our area exist, painting offers something different: a human interpretation, a felt experience translated into color and light.

Over these three decades, I’ve sold more than one hundred original oils and several hundred prints. I’ve also written The Ice Cream Shop Detective, an art mystery novel about forgery, offering an artist’s take on what makes a masterpiece different from a copy. I’m nearly finished with my second novel with the same main characters. People respond to the work--they always have. But like many artists working outside the narrow channels of the commercial art world, sustainable income remains elusive.

I’m at a point in my life where I need to paint full-time or not at all. The energy and time required for this work--the physical demands of painting outdoors, the mental focus of creating something meaningful--don’t leave room for other employment, even if that were available to me.
