Fund Raising for Shella Primary Sch

Donation protected

My 7 year old daughter Anisa and 12 year old niece Tiana are raising money to help a remote school in Lamu, Kenya.

The school is in a remote village (Shella) on Lamu Island in Kenya.  It is a multi-faith school providing education to 259 boys and girls from the village of Shella and nearby villages.  There were not enough desks or chairs at the school and those that were, were in a deteriorating state.  It was common for 2 or 3 children to share one desk.  With the money raised,  I (mum/aunt) have purchased and transported desks and chairs to equip Shella Primary School.  We have raised enough money so that every child will now have an individual chair and a desk to write on and store their books overnight.

Anisa and myself have been working extremely hard in the evenings and at weekends to bake some really yummy cakes to sell. Tiana with her grandma's help has been doing the same in Nairobi.

In 2017, through the bake sale and the crowdfunding on this page we raised just over £10,000.

We have sent 275 desks and chairs to equip all the 8 classrooms (plus 16 extra).

In addition, we also supplied over 3000 reading books in English and Kiswahili - new and used. The new books cost cerca £2,500.

We are also paying for the secondary school education for some children who have completed standard 8 at Shella Primary School.

In 2018 - we continue to raise funds for the school :

- to support more children through secondary school on a need be basis
- to equip the school with more reading books
- to build above the existing book room and create a library
- to build a canteen so the children are fed nourishing food

Anisa's and Tiana's parents and grandparents were born and raised in Kenya.  We visit often and we are very connected to the community in Shella.  Anisa attends the school when we visit and has made many friends.  The girls realise that they are able to make a difference and help provide the children of Shella with a brighter future.  Please support this initiative.

So what happened to the money raised?

The desks and chairs were manufactured in Nairobi (the capital). The factory that I chose made sturdy desks with metal legs with a view to last a long time. One set of desk and chair plus transport (1000km by road and 1 hour by boat) cost Kenya shillings 5000 (which is an equivalent of £40). I was in control of purchasing and arranging the transport. Every penny that was raised went directly for the purchase and transport of the 275 desks and chairs that were supplied.  You can see from the photos the difference that has been made.

Our aim is to raise another £10,000 in 2018

See what difference we can make together???
