The Legacy of Grandmothers – Women Who Shaped Us
What do we really know about our grandmothers?
When I asked friends about theirs, the answers were often vague: “She was kind,” “She made great food,” or simply, “I don’t know much.” That’s when I realised, so many stories are quietly fading away. As someone who grew up loving family stories and asking questions, I knew these memories deserved more. That’s how Legacy of Grandmothers was born.
This is a storytelling project based in Edinburgh, dedicated to preserving the lives, resilience, and wisdom of grandmothers, not just as caretakers, but as full human beings. What makes this project unique is that we tell these stories through the eyes of their grandchildren. These intimate portraits reflect personal memories and also offer a deeper cultural and historical understanding of the times these women lived through.
This project is also a feminist effort, a way of seeing history through women’s lenses. It’s about nurturing intergenerational bonds, healing, and cultural remembrance. Grandmothers may not always appear in history books, but they’ve shaped who we are more than we know.
We’ve already filmed our first promotional video and recorded some stories with beautiful care and quality. These will live on YouTube and in an upcoming podcast series, making the project accessible, free, and global.
Now, I need your help to keep going.
We're raising funds to cover production costs, pay contributors fairly, support editing, transcriptions, and equipment, and grow this platform into something powerful and lasting. Every donation, big or small, helps preserve these voices and carry them into the future.
If you believe in family, storytelling, or the strength of women across generations, please consider supporting this project. You’ll be helping to build something beautiful.
Thank you for being here.
