Support a Philly Family Torn Apart by Deportation

My name is Erika Guadalupe, and I’ve been a community organizer for immigrant rights for over fifteen years. Throughout this time, I’ve witnessed the devastating impacts of xenophobic immigration policies—how they translate into systemic violence that dehumanizes and discards members of our communities. This week, that violence struck close to home once again, affecting someone dear to me and to our wider Philadelphia community.

On Monday, April 21, my friend Mario was detained by ICE agents outside of his home as he left for work. By Thursday, April 24, he was already in Mexico, having been pushed through an immigration system where cruelty is the point. The pretext? A first-time DUI charge, which he had been prepared to show up to court for on April 23. ICE detained him before he even had the chance to appear. No process, no mediation—just disappearance.

Mario built a life in this country over the last 17 years. He is a deeply rooted member of our community, known for his generosity, his sense of humor, and his love for his family. He is the owner of a local painting business and a renowned chef who never hesitated to feed friends or show up with an offering of food at community events. He is a loving husband—watching him dance with his wife is one of the sweetest, most joyful memories I have.

And he is a devoted father of two U.S. citizen children who have been deeply affected by this sudden and violent separation. With his support, they have engaged deeply in the arts—through theater and the preservation of cultural dance traditions, including folkloric and Aztec dance. His son Gonzi played a key role in the acclaimed Nichos, a play about the Mexican immigrant experience in Philadelphia. Through its intertwined narratives, we collectively told the story of a father torn from his family by deportation. We never imagined that story would become their reality.

This family has given so much to the Philadelphia community over the years—and now, they are being forced to navigate an unimaginable loss. They haven’t just lost the emotional presence of a loving father and husband; they are now facing an uncertain future without the stability and support Mario provided.
