Support A “Nobles” Cause for Special Needs

Donation protected
Recently, I learned that my cousin, Shelby Nobles, had to quit her job at the start of the summer when the caregiver for her two young children, one with Down syndrome and the other with Down syndrome and Autism, failed to show up! As I spoke with Shelby, I began to imagine what it would be like to constantly be monitoring and caring for two children with special needs and what it entails. I tried to visualize how you care for one who never sits still, has self-injurious behavior, is non-verbal, constantly throws things, and needs assistance with all self care, while simultaneously helping the other who needs help with basic self care and requires lots of attention. In addition, trying to find the time to fight with insurance to cover medication or devices needed to help her children.

Shelby's husband, Ivan, has begun taking as many overtime jobs as he can as a carpenter, so that he is frequently away on the weekends. I also learned from her immediate family that Shelby and Ivan rarely, if ever, get a chance to do something for themselves, and never have time for a social life. Their life sounded simply overwhelming and exhausting to me!

Shelby has tried taking on a part-time job to help with expenses, but there is not enough money to cover caregiver costs. Caregivers typically charge $18-$25 an hour and up to $50-$75 an hour if they have special behavioral or medical training! Shelby has informed me that any financial assistance they can obtain only covers $8 per hour. Shelby going back to work full-time is also out of consideration at this time due to the many doctors' appointments, hospitalizations, and therapies her children require.

After learning all of this information, I posed the idea of a fundraiser to Shelby. At first she was opposed to asking for financial assistance because she felt there are others who need it more. While there may be others who have it "worse off", Shelby and Ivan have a significant and essential need that is worthy of our support! Any large or small amount could be put towards helping Shelby and Ivan cover caregiver costs and thereby obtain support for their children! Let's do something concrete to help ease the immense stress of this well deserving family!
