My business Selvista Guesthouses has been supporting a health clinic in our village on Isla Ometepe for 3 years. We have been paying the monthly salary of the lab technician at the clinic that conducts blood tests for pregnancies, parasite analysis and blood borne diseases.
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the hemisphere and does not have the basic health infrastructure for her people, let alone the capacity for dealing with the Corona virus.
We are a community based and committed business and we managed to support the Lab with profits from our business, even during the April 2018 social unrest and aftermath which resulted in over a year of almost no tourism upon which we depend.
Now, due to Covid-19 we have had to shutter up our business for an undetermined time and reduce the salaries or furlough recently hired employees.
We no longer have revenue and we cannot afford to maintain this support. Our goal is to support the health clinic from April until the end of the year. Any additional funds will be used to buy medical supplies and support unemployment among our staff.
