My heart is bursting with good news— I have been invited to work at the Charleston Gazette-Mail in Charleston, WV.
After championing the county’s original nonprofit homelessness efforts (RITI Berea) and bringing some hard-hitting, award-winning news to Madison County, I’m ready to take care of some business back home.
This means that I’m trying to move back to West Virginia, where I can be closer to my pappy and recharge in the mountains where I grew up.
Unfortunately, those who have read my work will know that we are facing a housing crisis across the country.
High rent, low rental quality, and low wages have contributed to me being unable to secure the deposit and first month’s rent necessary for this next step, so that’s what I’m trying to raise funds for.
Cost explanation: If I find a rental that costs about $1,500 per month, I’ll need about $3,000 to move in. Then, about $100 for GoFundMe fees.
What have I tried?
- loans (I’ve been repeatedly denied)
- buying a home (was told by a USDA packager that my application wouldn’t go through until next spring at the earliest)
To clarify, I can find rentals. I just can’t afford to move into them, and that’s very difficult to reconcile.
I never imagined it would be so impossible to move to a better paying job closer to home, but here I am, going against every Appalachian bone in my body asking for help.
Thanks so much for your help. ☀️❤️ I couldn’t have done any of this without y'all.
FAQ:
- Why don't you get a smaller apartment?
Great question! I have two kids, a boy and a girl aged 11 and 9, respectively. They're really too old to share a room.
- Where are you searching for a rental?
Zillow, word of mouth, and realtor.com, primarily.
