Hello, my name is Alexis Rosas, and some of you may know me as Ms. Alexis I work as a Family School Liaison, and I’m proud to be part of my amazing local school community.

But today, I’m reaching out not as a family school liaison but as a mother, asking for your help for my beautiful daughter, Quetzaly.

Quetzaly is 8 years old. She is bright, creative, funny, and full of love. But she also faces enormous challenges every single day she lives with both autism and epilepsy, two complex conditions that deeply affect her daily life.

In May of 2023, Quetzaly was officially diagnosed with epilepsy after a series of terrifying seizures. Since then, life has changed dramatically for her and our family. She has been on medications like Depakote and now Epidiolex (a cannabis-based treatment), but her seizures haven’t stopped in fact, they’ve increased since the school year began.

To protect her, she now has strict medical guidelines:

Only 1 hour of screen time a day due to photosensitivity triggers

Special transition glasses to help reduce the risk of seizures

Recently, Quetzaly has had to be sent home from school because she was extremely tired from absent seizures. Just two weeks ago, she even had to be taken by ambulance from school due to a severe epilepsy episode.

I am grateful to know that while she is at school, the school nurse is always attentive and looking out for her safety.

She sometimes becomes withdrawn/emotional , especially when things feel unpredictable or overwhelming. Her world can be full of noise, bright lights, and emotional challenges that are hard for her to process alone.

She is also under the care of mental health providers who are helping her understand and cope with her conditions because mental health matters.

As her mom, it’s heartbreaking to see her struggle. What gives us hope is the chance to give her something that could change her life:

A Trained Medical Service Dog

We are currently researching and carefully selecting the right organization to work with, but we are most inclined toward one program that we feel is the best fit for Quetzaly’s needs. We are awaiting their approval to move forward with the next steps.

We have been looking into Medical Mutts in Indiana and other similar organizations. Since we are located closer to Indiana and because Quetzaly has three siblings at home staying closer to home would help us reduce travel and lodging costs, making this journey a little more manageable for our family.

Here is some important information about Medical Mutts’ program:

Each service dog costs approximately $30,000. This includes:

• Professional training

• Daily care and enrichment

• Veterinary expenses and food

• Housing

• Lifetime support after placement

• 10 days of coaching at their facility where you and the service dog learn to work together

Medical Mutts offers scholarships up to $15,000 based on financial need to significantly reduce the cost.

The remaining balance after the scholarship is the client’s responsibility and can be covered through personal funds or fundraising.

While this is a significant financial commitment, we believe this service dog will bring Quetzaly immeasurable safety, comfort, and independence.

Hola, mi nombre es Alexis Rosas, y algunos de ustedes me conocen como Ms. Alexis. Trabajo como coordinadora Familiar Escolar, y estoy orgullosa de ser parte de mi increíble comunidad escolar local.

Pero hoy, no les hablo como coordinadora familiar escolar, sino como madre, pidiendo su ayuda para mi hermosa hija, Quetzaly.

Quetzaly tiene 8 años. Es inteligente, creativa, divertida y llena de amor. Pero también enfrenta enormes desafíos todos los días; vive con autismo y epilepsia, dos condiciones complejas que afectan profundamente su vida diaria.

En mayo de 2023, a Quetzaly le diagnosticaron oficialmente epilepsia tras una serie de convulsiones aterradoras. Desde entonces, la vida ha cambiado dramáticamente para ella y para nuestra familia. Ha estado tomando medicamentos como Depakote y ahora Epidiolex (un tratamiento a base de cannabis), pero sus convulsiones no han cesado; de hecho, han aumentado desde que empezó el año escolar.

Para protegerla, ahora tiene estrictas indicaciones médicas:

Solo 1 hora de tiempo frente a la pantalla al día debido a los desencadenantes por fotosensibilidad

Gafas de transición especiales para ayudar a reducir el riesgo de convulsiones

Recientemente, Quetzaly ha tenido que ser enviada a casa desde la escuela porque estaba extremadamente cansada debido a convulsiones ausentes. Hace solo dos semanas, incluso tuvo que ser llevada en ambulancia desde la escuela debido a un episodio severo de epilepsia.

Estoy agradecida de saber que mientras está en la escuela, la enfermera escolar siempre está atenta y cuidando de su seguridad.

A veces, Quetzaly se vuelve retraída o emocional, especialmente cuando las cosas se sienten impredecibles o abrumadoras. Su mundo puede estar lleno de ruidos, luces brillantes y desafíos emocionales que le cuesta procesar sola.

También está bajo el cuidado de profesionales de la salud mental que la ayudan a comprender y sobrellevar sus condiciones, porque la salud mental importa.

Como su mamá, es desgarrador verla luchar. Lo que nos da esperanza es la oportunidad de darle algo que podría cambiar su vida:

Actualmente estamos investigando y seleccionando cuidadosamente la organización correcta para trabajar, pero estamos más inclinados hacia un programa que sentimos es el mejor para las necesidades de Quetzaly. Estamos esperando su aprobación para avanzar con los siguientes pasos.
