Hi! I'm Mammraj Singh. I’m reaching out today to ask for your help in funding an exciting and transformative opportunity to study abroad in Italy this summer. I am able to do this through the program CIEE, a respected organization that provides students with the chance to experience different cultures while also earning college credit. The program will take place in Milan, Italy, and I will be traveling during the summer in July. There I will be able to explore the country's rich history and culture, have valuable experiences, build connections, and grow.

One of the biggest reasons why I want to do this is because of the new perspectives it provides. As someone who has faced a lot of miscommunications and misunderstandings, I know that these problems arise because of a lack of being able to understand or accept where the other person is coming from. Coming from a family that is half Dominican and half Indian, I have seen first hand how cultural differences and not being able to fully communicate can cause riffs in relationships. For that reason, I am continuously working on being more open minded and accepting, and I have noticed that one of the best ways to achieve that is by exposure. This opportunity will be able to give me that chance to really put this into practice and to help me improve at it.

About me:

I am a junior at Abbott Lawrence Academy, a school for high achieving scholars, with honor roll and a 4.2 GPA. I am also actively involved in Student Government, Latin American Appreciation Organization club (LAAO), Upward Bound Program, Go Green Club, Irise scholarship recipient at Izizwe Dance Studio, Early college student at Merrimack College, and a MITES Saturdays scholar at MIT which has helped me grow both academically and personally in a multitude of ways.

I am from a half dominican and half indian family, but it is mainly just me and my mom. I am grateful to have my grandparents and some other family members help, but they live far from where we are in Lawrence, MA. Therefore, we are a low-income family, since my mom is retired and only working a part time job. I am also a type 1 diabetic with hyperthyroidism. This has come with its own fair share of challenges such as dealing with misconceptions and stereotypes, the very intense management, and the financial cost, but I have learned from past experiences and have grown to know how to deal with those struggles.

The Total Cost Breakdown:

$2000 for the flight and travel fees

$750 for Down Payment and Program tuition

I have thankfully received a $6,705 scholarship from CIEE which covers a large chunk of this cost, the $750 is the remaining balance I need to pay.

$1000 for Personal Expenses

These funds will cover my medication, insurance, transportation within Italy, and other personal expenses during my stay.

Como alguien que se ha enfrentado a muchos malentendidos y problemas de comunicación, sé que estos problemas surgen debido a la falta de capacidad para comprender o aceptar el punto de vista de la otra persona. Al provenir de una familia que es mitad dominicana y mitad india, he visto de primera mano cómo las diferencias culturales y la falta de capacidad para comunicarse por completo pueden causar problemas en las relaciones. Por esa razón, sigo trabajando para ser más abierta y tolerante, y he notado que una de las mejores maneras de lograrlo es mediante la exposición. Esta oportunidad me dará la posibilidad de poner esto en práctica y me ayudará a mejorar.

Acerca de mí:

Soy estudiante de tercer año en Abbott Lawrence Academy, una escuela para estudiantes de alto rendimiento, con cuadro de honor y un promedio de calificaciones de 4.2. También participo activamente en el gobierno estudiantil, el club de la Organización de Apreciación Latinoamericana (LAAO), el programa Upward Bound, el club Go Green, recibí la beca Irise en Izizwe Dance Studio, soy estudiante universitaria anticipada en Merrimack College y soy becaria de MITES Saturdays en MIT, lo que me ha ayudado a crecer tanto académica como personalmente de muchas maneras.

Soy de una familia mitad dominicana y mitad india, pero principalmente somos solo mi madre y yo. Estoy agradecida de tener la ayuda de mis abuelos y algunos otros miembros de la familia, pero viven lejos de donde estamos en Lawrence, MA. Por lo tanto, somos una familia de bajos ingresos, ya que mi madre está jubilada y solo trabaja a tiempo parcial. También soy diabética tipo 1 con hipertiroidismo. Esto ha traído consigo una buena cantidad de desafíos, como lidiar con conceptos erróneos y estereotipos, una gestión muy intensa y el costo financiero, pero he aprendido de experiencias pasadas y he aprendido a lidiar con esas dificultades.

El desglose del costo total:

Afortunadamente, recibí una beca de $6705 de CIEE que cubre una gran parte de este costo; los $750 son el saldo restante que debo pagar.
