Most of you know that I spent the last 10 years caring for my grandmother - a journey that changed my life in so many ways. During that time, I met Nurse Joaquina Rego, who cared for Grandma during the last nine months of her life. Joaquina was truly a godsend. She and her family are remarkable people who dedicate so much of their time to helping others in their community.

Through them, I was introduced to a small orphanage in Viana do Castelo - the “City of Love” in Portugal - home to 15 amazing children. Every time I visit Portugal, I make it a point to take these kids out for lunch. The first time I did, one of them said it was the happiest day of his life. It broke my heart to realize that their routine rarely includes moments just for fun - no playdates, no weekend outings, just school, activities, and the orphanage. From that day on, I promised that whenever I was in Portugal, I’d take them out to create new happy memories. I will add they are care with love/respect by the assistants.

Every Christmas, donors usually provide gifts for them. But this year, I want to do something a little different - and that’s where you can come in. My goal is to take all 15 kids to the "local Target" (It's called Continente in Portugal), let them pick out the Christmas gift they truly want, and make it a day they’ll never forget.

I’m asking for your help - any donation, big or small, will make a difference. Nurse Joaquina Rego will hold onto the remaining funds and use them to support the children as new needs arise (sometimes new kids arrive or specific items are needed). Because of Portuguese law, we can’t show the children’s faces - you’ll see their photos marked with blue and pink hearts instead.

My grandparents taught me the value of giving to those in need, and I carry those values with me. But my journey in America has added a new layer of meaning to that value --- one rooted in community and generosity. This holiday season, I want to bring a piece of that American spirit of giving back to my home in Portugal.
