My name is Aysia James, and I am currently enrolled at Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, where I am expected to graduate in 2029. I am an international student born and raised in Canada, and I am the first among my siblings to study outside of the country. Coming from a family of six children, pursuing higher education has always been important to me, even though the journey has not been easy.

Growing up, I struggled tremendously in school and often felt limited by my learning challenges. For years, I doubted myself and believed I would never truly succeed academically. Despite being placed on an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and facing many obstacles, I refused to give up. Through faith, prayer, and perseverance, I slowly began to overcome struggles I once thought were impossible. What once felt like hopelessness turned into growth, confidence, and purpose. Over time, I improved academically and eventually became an Ontario Scholar, achieving grades I never imagined I could reach.

Attending Oakwood University, a Seventh-day Adventist school and Historically Black College and University (HBCU), has transformed my life spiritually, personally, and academically. Being surrounded by successful Black professors, students, staff, and alumni who look like me has given me motivation, encouragement, and a deeper sense of belonging. It has allowed me to grow not only academically, but also in my faith, identity, and understanding of my history and culture.

Currently, I am facing financial difficulties as an international student and need help covering essential educational expenses such as tuition and books. The financial burden of studying abroad has become challenging, and I am doing everything I can to continue my education without interruption.

My academic goal is to graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations with a minor in Graphic Design. In the future, I hope to build a career in product management and graphic design, where I can combine creativity, communication, and leadership skills to make a positive impact.
