Support a grieving family after father's death

Support the grieving family of Jose Martin Delgado Jaimes, who passed away from kidney failure less than three months after he was deported to Mexico.

Mr. Delgado spent over 35 years living in the United States before he was detained at the Northwest Detention Center (NWDC) in Tacoma, WA on March 12, 2018. Mr. Delgado had been suffering from kidney failure; while he was detained he required dialysis 3x/week and was on a waiting list for a kidney transplant.

At NWDC he described dirty, cramped conditions, insensitive guards, and little concern for his fatigued state after his dialysis treatments. He stated that the treatment he was receiving "would likely kill him," as he feared that the stress he experienced would increase his already high blood pressure. Though he was concerned for his health at NWDC, he also knew that deportation to Mexico "would be a death sentence" because he would lose any opportunity of obtaining a kidney transplant.

On April 10 2019, Mr. Delgado was deported to Mexico City. When he arrived the Mexican Department of State dropped him off at a drug rehabilitation center and gave him some cash. He was able to find support from a local organization to coordinate emergency dialysis, but ultimately was unable to obtain medical assistance from the Mexican government. At first he was denied his application for an official ID and was told that his birth certificate was fake, that he could not prove that he was a Mexican citizen. Otros Dreams en Acción (ODA) filmed an account of his experience  after he was deported. Unable to afford the cost of outpatient dialysis (around 3000 pesos/US$158 per treatment), and unable to obtain public health insurance as a Mexican citizen, he suffered complications that required multiple hospital visits. Ultimately he contracted an infection and died in the hospital on June 25, 2019.

From Mr. Delgado's son, Jose Manuel: "My dad was a caring dad. He always made sure that his kids came first, he taught right from wrong. Even though we struggled a lot, he always provided a roof over our heads and food on the table. For me, he was a one of a kind dad."

Mr. Delgado is survived by five children, including two sons who live in Vancouver, WA and a daughter who lives in Illinois. The family needs our support to attend his funeral. Donation to this fund will assist in covering the costs of travel, emergency US passport fees to bring his remains back home, and lost time from work.
